The location
Balaia — between the old town and the quiet beaches
Far enough from the centre of Albufeira to sleep, close enough to be there in seven minutes.

Balaia is the green, low-rise side of Albufeira — east of the town, just inland from the cliffs. It is largely residential: low houses with terracotta roofs, gardens, a golf course threading between the streets, and none of the density of the resort strip further west.
What that buys you is a base rather than a destination. The beaches at Santa Eulália and Maria Luísa are two kilometres down the hill — five minutes in the car. The old town, with its restaurants and its lift down to the sand, is a seven-minute drive. And the stretch of coast east of here — Olhos de Água, the red cliffs at Falésia — is the part of the Algarve people mean when they say they want to get away from Albufeira, and it starts on your doorstep. And for everyday life there is more around the corner than the map suggests: a snack bar and a local restaurant within a few minutes on foot, and a laundry a short walk further.
What is around the house
Distances are those published by the property’s managing agency; where a figure is not published, none is shown. The marker for the house is deliberately approximate — the exact address is given to guests on booking.
- Albufeira-Ferreiras station
- Faro airport
- Zoomarine
Balaia Golf is 900 m from the house in a straight line — the figure the listing quotes. The walk follows residential streets and comes out at roughly 1.7 km, about 20 minutes.
Three places that repay the short trip
-
Balaia Golf
A nine-hole par-3 course, the nearest thing the house has to a neighbour.
-
Praia da Falésia
Six kilometres of sand beneath red and ochre cliffs — the walk most people remember.
-
Albufeira old town
Restaurants, the Sunday market, and the tunnel and lift down to the town beach.
Why the Algarve, at all
If you have never been: the south coast of Portugal has quietly become the place Northern Europeans go when they want reliable sun without a long-haul flight. This is why.
-
The most reliable sun in Europe
The Algarve counts on the order of 300 sunny days a year. Summers are hot but tempered by the Atlantic; winters are mild enough for lunch outside, which is why so many people stay for months rather than weeks.
-
A genuinely spectacular coast
Golden cliffs, sea caves, and long sandy beaches that hold Blue Flag status in remarkable numbers. Falésia — six kilometres of sand under ochre cliffs — starts a short drive from the house.
-
One of the safest countries going
Portugal sits consistently near the top of the Global Peace Index. It is the kind of place where the evening walk to a restaurant is part of the holiday, not a calculation.
-
You eat very well, for less
Grilled fish that came off a boat that morning, local wine that costs less than water does elsewhere, and family-run restaurants that have not noticed food fashion. Eating out remains an everyday pleasure rather than a treat.
-
Easy to reach, easy to get around
Faro airport takes direct flights from dozens of European cities — around three hours from the UK, the Netherlands or Germany. English is widely spoken, and the A22 puts the whole coast within day-trip range.
-
A golf destination in its own right
More than thirty courses along one short coastline, played year-round. Spring and autumn here are what golfers elsewhere wish their summer was.
The area, up close
Getting here
Faro airport is about 35 kilometres east — closer to forty minutes than thirty once you are off the A22 and onto local roads. A hire car is the usual choice and makes the beaches and the coast east of here much easier; parking on the street by the house is safe and straightforward. If you would rather not drive, Be Cherish can arrange an airport transfer, and the train station at Albufeira-Ferreiras is about five kilometres away.
